Established in 1988, November 30th is the National Day of Computer Security. Every year, this important day presents an opportunity to raise awareness of cybercrimes, viruses, and the increasing digital threats in the modern era of technology. As personal and professional computer use increases, this day encourages individuals and organizations alike to reflect on their cybersecurity practices.

We recently spoke with Olivier Botz, who wears many hats at FMX Solutions, including Chief Security Officer, about the significant evolution of computer security to cybersecurity. In his 20 years at FMX Solutions, the types of threats organizations face have developed and changed immensely.

The State of Cybersecurity Today

Since the establishment of National Computer Security day in 1988, one of the most notable technological shifts is the transition from traditional computer security to a more comprehensive approach known as cybersecurity. As technology has advanced, tech vulnerabilities for companies and individuals alike have increased, making simple antivirus solutions insufficient. Today's cyber attacks are often more sophisticated, stealthy, and targeted. Despite these advancements, it remains true that humans are often the weakest link in any security system.

Reflecting on the past, Olivier notes that concerns such as worms and mass phishing campaigns have largely diminished, provided that users maintain good computer hygiene. However, new challenges have emerged that were not on the radar two decades ago. Modern concerns for companies now include the added layer of legal and financial repercussions of cybersecurity breaches (think:  ransomware,  lawsuits from data leaks, etc.)

Olivier adds that a common misconception among businesses is that they are too small to be targeted by cybercriminals. In reality, small businesses often lack the mature security measures, making them easier targets for attacks.

With the exponential rise of AI and automation, cyberattacks have become increasingly more complex. Deepfakes, social engineering, and intelligent attack bots are becoming more prevalent and difficult to combat. Additionally, many Artificial Intelligence agents are vulnerable to new types of attacks like LLM prompt injection and jailbreaking.

To enhance security, Olivier suggests every person take one simple, actionable step: remain calm and analyze every request. Most cyber threats have one key thing in common: urgency or danger. Whether the cyberattack is sent via email, phone call, or video call, the sense of urgency they create takes advantage of social engineering. When responding to an incident from a place of stress and urgency, it is all too easy to overlook telltale signs of phishing or smishing attempts.  Remember: always verify the requester's identity through a different communication channel.
